Chapter Fifteen

Fenway turned away from Cynthia Schimmelhorn, and Bryce Heissner’s eyes bored into her from across the aisle. Heissner sat sideways on one of the wooden chairs, his legs splayed, his right elbow up on the back of the chair.

“What is it, Mr. Heissner?” Fenway asked wearily.

“I’m just wondering how much longer you’ll keep up the charade that your daddy dearest is innocent,” Heissner said, tapping the back of the chair in an oddly timed rhythm with his fingers. “Surely there’s so much smoke around him, you must think there’s some fire in all of that by now.”

“Doesn’t mean he’s the source of the flame,” Fenway retorted. “In fact, I could say the same about you.”

“About me?”

“Yes, Mr. Heissner. You’re just as involved in Ferris Energy as my father is. More, in fact, since you hold all the purse strings. If there’s something that affects the bottom line, you have the final say, don’t you?”

“If you think I have more control over Ferris Energy than your dad—”

Fenway shook her head and took five steps toward Heissner until she was only two or three feet from him. “I don’t think you have more control over the public relations, or over what companies Ferris Energy buys or sells, but I know you have more control over where things come out of the budget, or how much money one division gets in discretionary spending.”

“So?” Heissner crossed his arms and glared at Fenway.

“So, Mr. Heissner, it means that if anyone is hiding anything having to do with Ferris Energy finances—like moving huge amounts of ill-gotten money around—you’d have visibility into it.”

Heissner set his jaw, seething. “That’s quite an accusation.”

“Accusation?” Fenway feigned surprise. “I’m accusing you of knowing what’s going on with your own company’s finances? And you’re angry with me?” She laughed, a fake, too-loud noise, and Heissner winced slightly. “I can’t call you a competent COO? You get mad at your wife when she calls you a good lover, too?”

Heissner’s cheeks went red. “That’s not what you meant, and you know it.”

Fenway smiled as wide as she could. “Yes, I do know it, Mr. Heissner. I am, in fact, accusing you of knowing a lot more that you’re letting on about the whole thing.”

“What whole thing?”

“The hidden supertanker. The refining of the embargoed oil. The money laundering. And especially the murders.”

Heissner shook his head. “The people who are doing all of this—whoever they are—had us all tricked. They were using decommissioned maintenance yards and holding tanks. It goes deep within the organization, but they didn’t touch the official bank accounts of Ferris Energy, and they certainly didn’t inform me about it.” He set his jaw. “How many people at the company do you think had the ability to coordinate that kind of monstrous project while keeping me in the dark?”

“I’m not sure how Ferris Energy works, Mr. Heissner,” Fenway said, “but I bet that you’ll identify my father as the only person who could pull that kind of thing off.”

Heissner chewed his tongue for a moment before giving Fenway a chilling smile.
